What is SEO? A SEO tutorial guide for beginners

Search engine optimisation, known as SEO for short (and in the US optimisation is spelt optimization) is the specialised technique of optimizing a website so that it can be found more easily by the search engines. This is achieved by making adjustments to internal and external aspects of a wesbite.

If a website is fully optimised, it should receive more visitor traffic than a similiar website that has not been optimised.

Companies apply varying degrees of search engine optimisation to website ranging from zero measures to highly focused search engine optimisation strategies. Put simply, companies that apply zero measures, will get far fewer visits than a website that has been fully optimised. If your website is not optimised and your competitor's website is fully optimised, your competitor's wesbite will get more visitors than yours and therefore will sell more and make more money than you.

The objective of SEO

The objective of search engine optimisation (SEO) is to increase the number of visitors a website receives by ranking towards the top in the search engine results pages for the keywords in the search query. This in turn should result in more conversions.

What does SEO involve

Optimising a website for search engines involves looking in detail at the website itself and the number of backlinks it has from other quality websites.

Is it SEO difficult to understand?

Not really. There are no great search engine optimisation secrets. But the ranking and placement methodologies require some technical knowledge (at least basic HTML) and are very time consuming, particularly the process of building back links. It also requires a degree of SEO flair, especially with regard to writing content that is optimised with keywords and phrases.
