Directory submissions

The major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN give credit for the number of relevant links to your website. Natural, one way links (ones that don’t need a reciprocal link on your website) are given extra weight, especially if the link is from a website that the search engines percive as being an authority in the subject matter.

One way of building up one way links is to obtain a listing in a web directory. Web directories act as online yellow pages and contain listings categories under categories. There are many directories on the internet which accept free submissions and submitting your website to these directories is a good way of building up one way links. The listing can also give you a source of extra traffic and visibility in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Submitting your website to directories is a fairly simple process but very time consuming. There are thousands of web directories online but many of these are not particularly useful as they are not indexed or not indexable by the search engines. Some charge for listings. Others are specialist niche directories which are not much use unless your business fits into the niche. Many require a reciprocal link from your site to theirs.
